I have been a Councillor for Melton Borough Council’s Newport Ward for some time now and during this time I have tried my utmost to do the best I can for my constituents, so I am thrilled to have been reelected in May 2019.
Over this period my fellow Newport Ward Conservative Councillors, my wider Conservative Councillor colleagues, and I, have achieved huge amounts despite an unprecedented period of financial austerity and its resulting spending cuts, caused by the previous incompetent Labour government of debt-fuelled, uncontrolled spending. Our approach, alternatively, has been based around managing the Council's finances effectively, resulting in eradicating Council debt, keeping Council Tax rises low, helping the weak and vulnerable, and investing wisely in projects Borough-wide which has brought about a boom in business and a growing quality of living.
My idea to introduce an Armed Forces Community Covenant, an Agreement between the local Authority and the local Armed Forces community, which aims to give further help to ex-Armed Forces persons returning to civilian life, has been very successful, one of which has been the working together with several organisations, more than ever before.
I have also been very proactive in trying to achieve our key priorities and pledges from our Election Manifesto, including holding monthly Councillors' Surgeries and taking action of 'grot' spots around the town.
I have spoken out against some big issues effecting the future of the Borough including saying no to the then Core Strategy which would have allowed all future housing and infrastructure to be concentrated to the north of Melton, which in my opinion would have been to the detriment of residents living in that part of the town, including in my own Newport Ward.
Furthermore, I have looked into issues which can often be forgotten, such as reporting potholes and other highways problems to County Highways. Also, I have seen that many streets around Melton and the wider Borough, have several old and rusting street name signs, so I have been working on getting these replaced with new and nicer ones, which is currently ongoing.
These are just a few examples of the work both my Conservative team and I have taken both at Ward and Borough level. Of course, being a politician, the work is never done and is always ongoing. So by electing Conservative Councillors, you will be naturally guaranteed further hard work and action on the issues that matter to you.
